Documentary: Darfur, Sudan

Executive Summary: Mustang International was able to work effectively in a highly volatile international setting to accurately capture and communicate the status of a controversial geo-political event within the parameters of the funding group.

In 2007, Humanitarian International Services Group approached Mustang International with a very specific and challenging production request. The goal was to travel into the resistance-held area of Darfur, in Africa’s largest nation Sudan, and capture interviews and imagery to be used to document the state of affairs in this war-torn region. The entire project was to be high-definition, but low profile. The technology available at the time that matched the budget and size requirements led to picking HDV as the format. Shooting any type of video in this country, even with national governmental approval and documentation, proved to be very challenging. Nevertheless, a 22-minute overview documentary was produced for the funding supporters – in addition to the 33+ interviews captured during the trip. Unfortunately, the contents of the project were ultimately deemed politically problematic and never publicly released.
